Pictures from Filming

Whilst me and Chaz were out filming, we thought it would be a good idea to take photographs of some locations we'd been to. Some can be used on the DVD Cover and the DigiPack.

Here are a few that I had taken, which could be used.

From Carnaby Street:

Near the Gherkin:

Near Canary Wharf

This picture has alot of foreground in it, which I don't want, so I will edit it, so that I am able to use it!

On Brick Lane

Here are some more pictures from week 11 and 12, whilst we were out filming;

This was in Poplar/ Tower Hamlets,

This was at Pontoon Dock,

This was at the Thames Barrier,

This was in Greenwich at the Observatory,
Unfortunately, by the time we got there the actually observatory was closed, however we still managed to get pictures and film a little.

Research into Permission

After a lot of phone calls and emails I finally received the permission required to film at Trafalgar Square. In order to gain the permission i had to present them with a form of Chadwell Heath Academy's liability Insurance. This in itself was hard work, as I had to see the school manager to provide the document to me.

This is the email which I had been sent, telling me that I can now film at Trafalgar Square.

Research into Permission to Film

I have been doing my research into where, we can film within London. I had to phone/email, different boroughs, to gain permission. There is 33 boroughs, and so far i have only got Canary Wharf as a definite to film at.
The link to the website where, it says students are allowed to film outside Canary Wharf is,
http://www.canarywharf.com/media/media_photographing.asp

I has also printed off and highlighted the section which said i was able to film, to as a precaution, in case police/security guards ask us if we have permission from the Canary Wharf Group plc.

After hours of looking on official websites where I can gain my permission to film in certain areas of London. I had found a website, where it lists landmarks/ tourist attractions in Westminster and how to gain permission from the different boroughs and locations to film my video.
The following link is the website,

Three Advertisement Analysis

Advertisement Analysis

Waysted Advertisement

Here the Heavy Metal album from Waysted is being advertised. The audience being targeted here is, people that prefer the genre of heavy metal. This can be connoted from the typography of the band name and album name. It can also be connoted from the main image. Where one member of the band is pretending to punch another member. This may show the mild violence within the album. Also the other member is holding an electric guitar, this shows the genre of the album. The colours that are used in the advert shows the stereotype of heavy metal. The colour and tone of the background connotes blood. The blue splashes show the wildness of the band.

Focus Group Planning

Planning for another piece of Audience Research.

Our focus group will be filmed with 6 people as our sample, during a free.

The way in which the focus group will take place will be asking them to give their opinion on the song that we have chosen to make a video for. We would then show the inspiration for our, which is the video of Nickleback- Rockstar.
Chaz and I would then do a shortened presentation of the one that Chaz had shown to the class. Once shown, we shall get feedback on whether our idea is good and what they think we should add in the video. We shall also try to get some ideas out of them, that may help Chaz and I.
Before, Chaz and I start asking the questions and showing theh videos, we might set out random words on seperate pieces of paper and lay them out on the table. Some words will relate to our genre which is 'Urban Pop' and some will relate to other genres. We will then ask them to pick out certain words that they think relate to our genre. This will help Chaz and I get an insight on what they think our genre is. It will also liven the focus group.

Chaz and I, will then show more videos and presentations, and ask more questions relating to them.

Feedback From Music Presentation

Here is the song, which i was planning to use.

Feedback from Music Video Presentation

Strengths:
My presentation overall was very flowing and was well explained. Personally I like the way I had set it out and the way in which everything was explained. The stereotype which I had explained about my target audience was made clear. However, my teacher had criticised one point, this will be explained in the weakness section. Strength was the way I had described another artist which mine would be based around. This allows the audience to draw a comparison between my artist and Eminem.

Weaknesses:
The weakness which my teacher had pointed out was who will be casted in my video, as it degrades women. So there was a weakness, with how my lyrics would be represented. My class had told me that a weakness was that I did not explain the class of my audience very well, and so it was unclear who my artist would appeal to. However, I think that is wrong, because from the song and its lyrics, it is quite clear on who my audience would be.

Improvements:
I think that I could have improved on describing my target audience and the way that I presented my presentation to the class. E.g., the way the slides were laid out.

Other Media Consumption: Heavy Metal, Punk

Location:

How does the band's typography and visual appearance differ?

Here The Gallows typography is gothic like. This typography matches their heavy metal rock music. You can also see Splatters within the bands name. This is most likely to be blood splatters, making the band look more scary. The pictures underneath the Gallows name represent different things. These images are, of a snake, Swords with blood dripping from them and a tudor rose.

Here the typography of the Hadouken logo is completely different. The typography is more in blocks. This makes it look funkier and younger.

Hadouken's logo has much more shapes. Making it look more vibrant. The different colours show the uniqueness of the band. Giving them a different style.

This logo differs from the Gallows, due to the patterns and colours.

How does the band's merchandise differ?

The Gallows personally design their own merchandies. Frannk the lead singer of the band designs their T-shirts. Which they sell on to their audience. This makes the audience feel more connected to the band. The Gallows sell their merchandise in the UK, they also have European and American Orders.

They sell T-shirts, Skinnies, Women's Apparel, Headwear, Outerwear and Assorted merchandise.

This is the website for the Gallows, where the audience is able to purchase the merchandise online.

Hadouken sell merchandise with their logo on it. It is then clearly evident what the merchandise of the band Hadouken is. Unlike the Gallows, Hadouken also sell smaller products such as, wristbands and bags.

This is the website for Hadouken, where the audience is able to purchase the merchandise online.

How do these differences increase their appeal to their differing niche audiences?

The two bands appeal to two different audiences.

Considering the range of ancillary products avaliable for both brands identify three other products you would develop to help each band's brand.

Gallows:

Products which I would develop for the Gallows is a Gallows guitar, a Biography and Freepost about the band.

Firstly I would produce a Gallows guitar. This is for instrumental fans, which are fans of the Gallows and can also play the guitar. If they can't play the guitar then, they are able to learn. Allowing a Gallows guitar to be open to the public, lets the audience connect with the members of the band. As they will feel as they are part of the band, with their Gallows guitar.

Another product that I would produce is a biography of the band members. This will let the audience become closer to the band, as they will know how each band member got to this stage in their life. This might give the audience the confidence to follow their dreams. The audience can also relate to the events which have happened in the band members lives.

The last product that I would produce for the Gallows is freepost of the bands development.

The audience can sign up to freepost, where they will receive information on the progress of the band. The information can contain discounts on clothing products or when and where they are next performing. Or even when their next album/single will be released.

Uses and Gratifications

Entertainment/Diversion

The audienec of the Gallows can escape from their own reality. This is most evidant when the audience goes to concerts performed by the Gallows. By going to these concerts the audience has the chance to just have fun and personally interact with the members of Gallows. This environment is very different from their usual routine and so allows the audience to experience something new and different.

Information/Surveillance

By going on to the Gallows personal website, the audience is able to know what the Gallows are currently doing. The website also gives the audience information on their latest singles and albums. Also updating them on the news related to themselves. This allows the audience to interact and bond with the Gallows as they are kept up to date by them.

Personal Identity

The audience of the Gallows are able to be themselves. When going to The Gallows concerts they are able to be themselves and are sorrounded by others just like them. This may be something which they are inable to do in the working world, this is due to the target audience the Gallows appeal to. As they appeal to a very niche audience, not many of the audience friends or collegues may like that music. And so this may be an opportunity where they are able to be themselves or find out who they really are.

Social Relationships

The audience have the chance to talk about new designs which maybe avaliable to them on t-shirts. They may also talk about new tattoos which they may have discovered on the members of Gallows. This allows them to omake conversation about personal tattoos they may be thinking about getting. This may act as a gateway to a more in depth conversation.

Why are music videos increasing important when promoting an artist?

Music videos are important, as it makes the artist known. When a music video is seen not only do you hear the song, but you also see the artist/band who is singing it. This gives the audience an idea of who the artist is. Helping them promote themselves. The audience can then see the physical appearance of the artist and begin to associate the artists’ songs with their face. The artists’ set an image for themselves via music videos, which the audience will begin to follow.

What are the three types of music video?

The three types of music videos are;

Performance: This is a video that captures a live performance of a band/artist, showing the excitement of a live event. Usually used in metal, punk and country genres.
For example, at 2 minutes 45 seconds into the song there is a scene of a live performance.

Narrative: This is where the video tells a story. Usually used in hip-hop and country genres.

Conceptual: This is where the videos visuals are appropriate to the tempo of the song.

Why is branding an artist/band especially important when marketing to niche subcultures?

Niche subcultures are usually very unique and have their own style and so will not conform to an artist or band that does not have one. Niche subcultures may be harder to impress than mainstream and so branding to towards them will help attract them. By branding towards the niche subcultures, the artist will be able to form their own image, allowing them to become popular. Not only with the mainstream audience but also the niche audience.

How does branding 'from within the band' increase the appeal to a niche, subculture based audience?

When the band became part of the audience, the audience will become more attached with the band/artist.
For example, the Gallows interact with their audience by jumping on them and singing with them at concerts. This increases the appeal to the niche audience as they want to be as involved as they can with the artist/band.
Another example is that the Gallows write their own lyrics and design their own merchandise. This makes the connection between the audience and the band stronger.

Research on Gallows

The Gallows target audience;

Age Range: Personally, I think that the age range of the target audience for the Gallows is 18-30 years. This is due to the lyrics and overall appearance of the band. For example the tattoos which the bands lead singer has.

The members of the band are most likely to influence their target audience by their actions and clothing. Over 30 year olds may not agree with their appearance and so do not conform. Also the lyrics of certain songs are violent and 30 year olds are more mature, most will have a stable career and a busy lifestyle. Making them have no relation with the Gallows.

Gender: The members of the band are very aggressive targeting more males than females. For example, a concert/ live performances The Gallows are jumping onto the audience.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MabDcFbRNeM
This is not usually an environment for females. It is also mainly appealing to males as their lyrics despise women. For example,

“Blackening her name
Screaming in her face
I'll fucking drown you in the rain
Will someone shoot that fucking snake

I've got a knife for you
To turn your heart from red to blue
The beating
I've got a knife for you
Engraved with the words fuck you
The bleeding.”

Not only do the lyrics talk about women in a disrespectful manner but they also differ from how women think. Women talk about the heart being a safe place to be, usually about love. But these lyrics are talking about the complete opposite.

Ethnicity: Due to all the members of the band being white, the ethnicity of the target audience is going to mainly be white too. The genre of the Gallows is punk, again which will appeal to a white audience.

Hobbies and Interests: I think that the Gallows target audience would be interested in art. This is due to the t-shirts and tattoos which the band has to offer. This is because most of the Gallows merchandise has a design on them. This shows that their target audience will be interested in art.
